How to travel safely during COVID

Guest Author- Alex Burger

Although the country has been slowly getting back to normal (somewhat, at least), people are still having major concerns with travel, especially with rising cases of COVID again. Will we ever be back to normal? I have no idea. But, I also believe that while we do need to protect ourselves and be careful, we also need to focus a lot on taking care of ourselves and also living our life. One of the things that I love most is traveling and I think that there is a way to still travel and follow your interests, while staying safe and protecting others. Here are some of my best traveling tips during COVID:

Consider Your Lodging

The first step to planning a safe trip is to consider your lodging. I just heard that it is much safer to rent an airbnb where you are not coming into contact with a ton of other people, compared to staying at a hotel. While I think that is a great idea, it’s not always practical. If you are staying at a hotel, just do your research. Call and find out what their safety protocols are. Some hotels mandate masks in the common areas, and are doing enhanced cleaning to their guest rooms. Everyone has their personal comfort level when it comes to where they stay, so if you feel comfortable staying in a hotel vs. a rented home, that is great! If you don’t, then find a home that you can rent where you will not be in contact with many others. That’s great, too!

Bring Along The “Must-Haves”

When you are making your packing list, make sure to bring along the “must-haves” such as hand sanitizer, masks (I like bringing multiple to have clean options), and any other must-haves, such as sanitizing wipes, a sanitizing spray, etc. Again: everyone’s comfort levels are different. Some might want to bring along their own soap for bathrooms and others may travel with only 1 mask and hand sanitizer. To each their own, but do make sure that you bring along your must-have essentials, in order to keep yourself safe while out and about.

Research The City And Business Guidelines

Each city has different rules and regulations in place. For example, in Greenville, SC, they have a mask mandate, where people have to wear masks anytime they go into a public building. Some businesses are implementing a limited number of patrons that they are allowing in their building at a time. The reason why you want to research these rules is because you want to be able to plan in advance instead of getting to your destination and not knowing about any rules that might be in place. Each city (and each business) is very different, so figure out those details ahead of time so that you will not be caught off guard.

Keep Up With Your Health Before + During Your Trip

Before you leave for your trip, make sure that your health is up-to-date. By this, I just mean that you have gone to all of your necessary health appointments such as a yearly check-up and bi-yearly dental appointment. Metro Decatur Dental Group PC, in Metro-Atlanta, can help you out, if you are searching for a dentist that can help before an upcoming trip. Dental issues have been pinpointed to coincide with overall total health issues, so it’s really important to keep up with your dental care. Metro Decatur Dental Group PC has fantastic reviews online and the dentist, Dr. Simms, is known for his caring demeanor and ability to produce fantastic results for his clients. Dr. Gary A. Simms, along with the rest of the staff at Metro Decatur Dental Group PC, believes that when you feel good about yourself, it shows in your appearance. Dr. Gary Simms started his career by obtaining his bachelor’s degree in Science at the University of New York. After getting his degree, Dr. Simms went on to obtain his D.M.D. degree at the University of New Jersey School of Dental Medicine. Once he completed his dental residency, he opened up his practice in Bronx, New York, but in 2006, he decided to make the change and move to Georgia, opening up Metro Decatur Dental Group PC. He has a lot of experience and makes sure that every single one of his patients understands their dental care plan and why certain things are essential. Metro Decatur Dental Group PC provides many services such as dental fillings, dentures, dental implants, teeth cleaning, teeth whitening in Decatur, invisalign, tooth extraction, and more.

Dine Outdoors

A good safety measure while you are traveling? Eat outside! You have to go out while you’re on-the-go, so just be smart about it and find restaurants that have outside dining. You could even have fun with it and order take-out instead of eating in the restaurant, and find a cool spot to have a picnic. I do, however, think that if you prefer to eat indoors, most restaurants are spacing their diners out, so it’s a relatively safe activity as long as the restaurant is clean and following safety protocols. The weather has been great for outdoor dining, so take advantage of that before it gets really chilly!

Be Smart

Last but not least, just be smart about your travels. If you do not feel well, consider postponing your trip. I know that it is hard to miss out on things, but we are in a pandemic and you do need to be considerate enough to stay home for the health of others…even if you think that you just have a cold. See someone else coughing a lot? Stay back. Give others space for not only yourself, but them, as well, and most importantly, just follow your own comfort levels while also being considerate to those around you. We CAN travel safely right now, as long as people are smart about it.
